How many times have passed as I wandered in the darkness? With my heart that had already closed, time just passed away. I thought that I would forgot all the things that I wanted to forget. But every time I turn my head, I always clearly remember your tearful face.” –Byun Jin Sub, Back to You [translated lyrics]

Since the first time I heard this song, somehow I already had this feeling that its lyrics have a sad meaning. Well, it always can be heard from the melody, sometimes. And my feeling turns out to be true. “Back to You” is a song about regret. It is a song that tells about someone who finds himself in regret of letting go the person who loved him unconditionally. “How many times have passed as I wandered in the darkness? With my heart that had already closed, time just passed away. I thought that I would forgot all the things that I wanted to forget. But every time I turn my head, I always clearly remember your tearful face.” Regret always comes late, doesn’t it? It took many nights of wandering, it took many times that had passed away, before he finally could realize that he could never forget about her, and those pain he left for her that streaming down along in her tears. “Even when I leave without a word, or with my harsh words that could only hurting you, you used to look upon my deep wandering with your never changing warm eyes. Why was it so hard for me to come back to you again? Just now I’ve realized that I couldn’t leave you until the day I die.” The thing that hurts the most is the fact that she was the one who truly loved him, despite all of his lacks and cruel acts, inspite of all those scars he gave her; and he would never find someone like her again in his lifetime. And now he has been left alone with one question; why was it so hard for him to come back to her again back then? Now after he realizes that he could never leave her, he finds himself crawling back to her, all over again.
“Back to You” dirilis pertama kali pada tahun 1989 sebagai title song dari album kedua Byun Jin Sub. This song made him an A-lister singer. It became an inspiration for the 1999 movie titled “Back to You” which was starring Choi Soo Jong, Ha Hui Ra, and Kim Min Jong. Album kedua Byun tersebut meledak di pasaran, dan berkat lagu “Back to You”, ia menyabet penghargaan untuk kategori tertinggi, yaitu Daesang (Grand Prize) dalam helatan ajang Golden Disk Awards, pada tahun 1989 dan 1990 berturut-turut. Pada tahun 1990, Byun berhasil meraih penghargaan untuk kategori Singer of the Year dalam ajang penghargaan bergengsi, KBS Music Awards. Versi original lagu “Back to You” adalah lagu ballad yang menonjolkan vokal Byun. Pada program “Immortal Songs 2” episode 91, lagu ini dibawakan oleh 2BiC dengan aransemen R n’ B ballad. This duo, consisting of Ji Hwan and Jun Hyung, showed a deep ringing and delicate emotions through their performance. Sementara itu, pada episode 163, Kim Kyung Ho menampilkan “Back to You” dengan aransemen rock ballad. That was what happened when the best rocker met ballad music; an explosive performance, a powerful voice and desperate cries at the same time. Besides the original version, I also love Kim Kyung Ho’s version, just because I prefer rock arrangement to any other genres. Indeed, “Back to You” is a masterpiece. No matter how the arrangement turns it out, it always has this familiar basic melody, like every other legendary song. Above all, the melancholic melody of “Back to You” is epicly everlasting.

Even when I leave without a word, or with my harsh words that could only hurting you, you used to look upon my deep wandering with your never changing warm eyes. Why was it so hard for me to come back to you again? Just now I’ve realized that I couldn’t leave you until the day I die.” –Byun Jin Sub, Back to You [translated lyrics]
