The Sense of an Ending

Your cold voice, it seems like something is wrong, I can’t figure out your heart. At the sudden plans, I look at myself in the mirror, I tell myself it’s probably nothing and leave the house. I think my heart figured it out, my footsteps get slower. I don’t think I can bear to look at the pretty face that will break up with me.” –Jung Joon Young, The Sense of an Ending [translated lyrics]

Sekitar satu tahun setelah berakhirnya ajang pencarian bakat “Superstar K Season 4”, juara ketiganya, Jung Joon Young, melakukan debut di dunia musik Korea Selatan. Rocker yang sebelumnya merupakan vokalis band indie ini merilis album mini perdananya “Jung Joon Young 1st Mini Album”, pada tanggal 10 Oktober 2013. Sebuah lagu bertajuk “The Sense of an Ending” dirilis sebagai lead single dari album tersebut. Lagu rock ballad ini memiliki judul asli dalam Bahasa Korea yang dalam Bahasa Inggris berarti “10 Minutes Before Breaking Up”.
“The Sense of an Ending”, just like its title, is a song about someone’s feeling in facing a breakup. Somehow that kind of strange feeling is there. A feeling about separation. “Your cold voice, it seems like something is wrong, I can’t figure out your heart. At the sudden plans, I look at myself in the mirror, I tell myself it’s probably nothing and leave the house. I think my heart figured it out, my footsteps get slower. I don’t think I can bear to look at the pretty face that will break up with me.” Every step becomes harder. Every second becomes slower. Every breath becomes heavier. Because they know exactly what they will face later. It’s a goodbye. And they don’t want to face it. “I guess it’s really going to be over, I keep running out of breath. Though I’m not confident to let you go, a breakup where one takes a step back, that’s probably a grown-up thing to do.” Somehow they know that it is the best way, but they can’t hide their hurting heart. “What should I say? What kind of expression should I make? Won’t my turned back look too much in pain? Should I cry and cling on? Should I show my weak side? I’m afraid of seeing you from far away.” And the worst of all is the fading presence of that person. “A cry escapes and tears fall, I get angry at myself for being like this. The minute, the second that passes, can’t it stop here? I will practice lying to say that I’m alright, but why are you growing faint from far away?”

Sebuah music video (MV) dirilis untuk lagu “The Sense of an Ending”, dengan sutradara perempuan muda berbakat, Lee Sa Kang, sebagai sutradaranya. Aktris cantik Jung Yoo Mi, yang juga merupakan istri virtual Jung Joon Young dalam program acara variety “We Got Married”, didapuk sebagai model dalam MV tersebut. Although it’s not my favorite song in the album, this song has a solo guitar part that’s quite impressive. Besides, “The Sense of an Ending” is getting more addictive as I hear it more often. Plus, I can’t get enough of Jung Joon Young’s sexy and husky voice.
