There are many endless nights with the pain endure inside her torn apart heart. Don’t know how much tears the camellia lady had cried. Tired from crying, exhausted from longing, those small petals are bruised in red.” –Lee Mi Ja, Lady Camellia [translated lyrics]

First released in 1964, this song is considered as Lee Mi Ja’s biggest hit. More than 300.000 copies were sold, and that was about 70% of the total album sales in that time. It means that 7 out of 10 albums sold at a record store were “Lady Camellia”. This song ranked first on music chart for 36 consecutive weeks for the first time in the Korean music history. “Lady Camellia” is known to be Lee Mi Ja’s personal favorite. She expressed feminity and the deep sorrow of this song with her unique singing method. Indeed, she’s truly inarguably the Queen of elegy.

“Lady Camellia” is a song about the sorrow of a woman who waits for her lover. In the beginning it’s quite hard to find the meaning of this song, because its lyrics is full with figures of speech. But then, as I listen to this song and read its lyrics all over again, it’s actually a little explicit. “There are many endless nights with the pain endure inside her torn apart heart. Don’t know how much tears the camellia lady had cried. Tired from crying, exhausted from longing, those small petals are bruised in red.” That girl who keeps waiting is referred as the camellia lady. Why camellia? Because it’s a flower to symbolize and represent devotion. As the camellia hurt by pain of a long waiting, it gets bruised. “That is a story behind camellia petals, unspeakable story the heart keeps holding close. Again today, the camellia lady is still waiting. When will that day come? That day when my love who has left find the lonely camellia.” Hence, no matter how many seasons have passed, the camellia is still there. Waiting, in vain.

His stage was impressive. He didn’t win, but this debut song on “Immortal Songs 2” made him famous. Later on, Im Tae Kyung performed “Lady Camellia” again on episode 32, which was the second part of “Super Match of Unfortunate Classic” special edition. From all versions, I love Im Tae Kyung’s the most. Indeed, it’s his song everyone wanted to listen again. It sounded like a man’s heavy cry that consoles a woman’s broken heart. Besides, the original song itself is a masterpiece. Even just hearing the title of the song could make the audience applaud. Moreover, Im Tae Kyung’s arrangement is marvelous. Lee Mi Ja is a true legend. Sometimes glorious, sometimes sorrowful. She sings about women’s emotions and she’s the Queen of elegy.
