It’s always raining when they break up, do we live in some kind of a tropical rain forest? Lonely autumn nights and memories always stick together, is it some kind of a formula?” -R.ef, Farewell Formula [translated lyrics]

Episode 117 program acara musik “Immortal Songs 2: Singing the Legend” adalah bagian kedua dari edisi spesial “The Heartthrob is Back!”.
“Farewell Formula” is a song about someone’s restrained sadness after a separation with the one they love. In drama series or movies, a separation is always identical with rain. And also, loneliness and memories are always identical with autumn. Separation, loneliness, memories, seem like they have a certain formula. Hence, it’s not always like that in reality. It’s always raining when they break up, do we live in some kind of a tropical rain forest? Lonely autumn nights and memories always stick together, is it some kind of a formula? When they bid farewell to the one they love, it’s a bright and sunny summer day. Rather than on a rainy day, it feels harder because they can’t hide away their sadness easily. Did you ever break up on a sunny day? It’s worse than on rainy days. It’s hard to hide away your sadness. Even though it hurts so bad, they could do nothing but wish for their beloved one’s happiness. Even so, they couldn’t easily believe in love anymore, at least not so fast. With his past love still in his heart, he cries but wishes her happiness. There are no such angels anymore, I’m sure they’re only in a fairy tale.” With the sadness hidden behind a smile, they realize how sad it is to say goodbye to someone really precious. It really hurts inside and it feels really empty. Although it can’t be expressed in words, when they hear those cheesy break up song, tears fall unknowingly. “All those lame break up songs can’t explain what it feels like to lose you. But why does it make me cry when I hear them?

This song was a bigger hit than the title song of the same album, “Silent Scream”. It was the number one song on K-Pop Top 10 chart for three consecutive weeks in 1995Back in 1995, R.ef’s dance was the “it” dance. They became popular through addictive lyrics and cute dance. They took over the 90s’ music world with the fastest beat. They were a perfect team that inspired many of today’s idols.

Just like a faded picture in our memory, their performance made us travel back in time. It was such a delightful yet touching performance.
