Before This Spring Ends

Spring has come with that familiar scent of when we first met. The tree next to the bench that you were sitting on is still there. I thought I’d forget about it as time went by but even as I said that, I knew it wouldn’t happen.” –Roy Kim, Bom Bom Bom [translated lyrics]

Although it has a lovely and cheerful melody, the lyric of “Bom Bom Bom” is actually quite sad. “Bom Bom Bom” is a song about someone who reminiscing their past love on a bright spring day. It was spring when they first met. And it’s spring now that they’re all alone. “Spring has come with that familiar scent of when we first met. The tree next to the bench that you were sitting on is still there. I thought I’d forget about it as time went by but even as I said that, I knew it wouldn’t happen.” They’re going through the cold winter alone only to realize that that person is the only one they want to be beside them when the spring comes. “Once again, spring has come, after the winter of heartbreak without you had passed. I sit on this bench and reminisce as these cherry blossoms are blooming. There are times when the feeling of love grows dull, but now I finally realize that even those times are part of love.” A relationship might be fluctuative, but the love is always there. On that spring day, like the day when they first met, those feelings are coming back to life. With those feelings, they convince that person and themselves too, to not giving up, to continue love each other, to keep trusting each other. “Let’s stop holding back, let’s not hesitate any longer. I’ll push back those painful days and tell you now. My dear, I knew right away when I first saw you. My dear, be with me before this spring ends.”

I really love this folk pop song. Especially the ‘smirk voice’ part and the whistling part. “Bom Bom Bom”is a great debut song. It shows Roy Kim’s colours and characters very well. Hearing it makes me want to fall in love. And indeed, I officially fall in love with Roy Kim.

Once again, spring has come, after the winter of heartbreak without you had passed. I sit on this bench and reminisce as these cherry blossoms are blooming. There are times when the feeling of love grows dull, but now I finally realize that even those times are part of love.” –Roy Kim, Bom Bom Bom [translated lyrics]
