Becoming Dust

When I listen to Bach’s music, the forgotten memories come back to me. Even my song that was blown away by the wind comes back as a whistle. In my small space, memories are pilling up, and tears fill my eyes for no reason.” –Kim Kwang Seok, I’ll Become Dust [translated lyrics]

“I’ll Become Dust” is a song about someone who’s longing for their past lover. It has simple lyrics yet deep meaning within it. “When I listen to Bach’s music, the forgotten memories come back to me. Even my song that was blown away by the wind comes back as a whistle. In my small space, memories are pilling up, and tears fill my eyes for no reason.” As much as they long for that person, they can’t see that person. Somehow they wish they could become dust and fly away with the wind to see that person. “I gather all my heart and write a poem, but they aren’t enough to describe you. I’ll become dust and fly away, I’ll ride the wind and go to you.”

The late Kim Kwang Seok’s songs are still popular even after he passed away. It means that his songs are legendary. Including “I’ll Become Dust”, which has sung by a lot of singers as a remake. This song was originally sung by Lee Mickey in 1987, and then Lee Yoon Soo in 1991, but it was Kim Kwang Seok’s favorite song, and he often sang it during his live performances. Kim Kwang Seok’s cover of this song was then included in his commemorative album that released in 1996. On 2012, “I’ll Become Dust” was remade by the audition program Superstar K4’s contestants (later second runner-up and winner respectively), Jung Joon Young and Roy Kim, as their battle song on Super Week. This remake was a big hit. I personally love this remake to the galaxy and back. As I’m writing this, I keep playing and replaying the remake version all over again. Jung Joon Young’s rough voice and Roy Kim’s husky voice miraculously went well together. It’s such an eargasm!
